Today’s Tip: Check your heaters!

holgate-glacier-calving

Well in Sunny Southern California we had strange weather yesterday. It was rainy and about 66 degrees! This by the way for our readers outside the Golden State is freezing!

In fact my personal tank went from a steady 78 to 72 degrees overnight! Such swings can be stressful on livestock in your aquarium. Therefore today’s quick tip is to inspect your heaters. In some cases heaters can fail after 2-3 years and its best to replace it now, then be stuck in the middle of winter with a cold tank.

AquaMaxx GFO & BioPellet filters

IMG_0913

We posted a few pictures to our Flickr stream, but AquaMaxx Aquariums has released new Biopellet and GFO based filters. The filters are unique because the bottom plates of each filter are precision cut but create randomized flow inside the reactor ensuring water is fully filtered and does not pass thry the media.

Acclimating your livestock.

Today, I was answering an email about how you properly acclimate a fish to a quarantine tank. This is a great question, because not everybody quaranties their livestock. Well, when acclimating you can do a few things, one is to float the bag for 30 mins allowing the temperatures to match and then placing the fish in a container and start a drip.

The best way to start a drip is to use a Two Little Fishies Veggie Mag Clip and some airline tubing. The mag clip secures the tubing in place. Then start a siphon and then tie a small knot on the end dripping into the container.

After 30-45 mins then insert the fish into the temporary QT home. If you have any questions, send us an email to info@dailyaquatics.com!

Check your GFO Media… of late there have been emails asking how long one should let their GFO media sit in their reactor or their sump. This media should be replaced after four weeks, perhaps even earlier depending on whether your phosphates are higher than average.

If you need GFO media purchase Phosban or RowaPhos and you can get it at MarineDepot.com. Click on our banner ad or the link below and you will support DailyAquatics!
