US Congress repealing light bulb ban?

DailyAquatics.com – For those who read political articles or pay attention to major legislation (I do) you will remember that a few years ago the United States enacted policy that would effective eliminate the sale of inefficient incandescent lighting. The so called “light bulb ban” will be codified and enacted by 2012. Whether you agree with the law or not, it was passed in 2007 and signed into law by then President George W. Bush.

This relates to the hobby because some of us (myself included) use metal halide lamps. Some manufacturers use technology that falls under the ban. The law calls for older inefficient lamps to be phased out and replaced with efficient incandescent, compact fluorescents and LEDs.
Recently Texas Congressman Joe Barton introduced a bill that would scale back ...

Daily’s Quick Tip 07/11/11

Credit: Google Images

Today is 7/11 and apparently some participating 7-Eleven franchises are giving away free stuff… This gave us the idea for Today’s Quick Tip and that is check your thermometers!

If you leave them sitting in the sump or hanging on the side of the tank algae begins to grow on them giving a different reading than your aquariums current temperature. This could lead to the chiller turning on later or the heater coming on too soon. That’s the main finding of a recent study by researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society who compared fish recently caught in coastal Kenya with the bones of fish contained in ancient Swahili refuse heaps in order to understand how to rebuild the current fisheries.

First Look: ATI T5 Dimmable Fixture

IMG_0826

Recently DailyAquatics.com had the ability to take a few pictures of the ATI Dimmable T5 fixture (Sunpower Model). The fixture is very nice, it has the same sleek designed, with one exception. A very nice controller with many buttons. In this hobby many buttons equal many headaches or…. dead coral skeletons thrown against the wall. Nevertheless, this new fixture looks very nice (Like all ATI Fixtures) and would provide hobbyists that true dawn to dusk effect they are seeking.

Note: Dimmable T5 lamps first ramp up at 20%, so when they first come on, its brighter but then dims down to the percentage you program. Here are some pictures below. Enjoy!
